Melissa Anne Johnson Obituary, Death – Valdosta Woman Dies After Train Collision
Melissa Anne Johnson, 49, of Valdosta, Georgia, died Friday night, September 18, 2026, after being struck by a Norfolk Southern train.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:20 p.m. in the 2400 block of Gornto Road. Valdosta Police responded to the railroad tracks after a Norfolk Southern employee called 911 to report that a train conductor had struck a person.
Officers who arrived at the scene found a deceased person near the tracks. Evidence gathered during the initial investigation later identified the victim as Johnson.
The northbound Norfolk Southern train was involved in the incident. According to the conductor, Johnson was lying across the railroad tracks when she was struck. She suffered fatal injuries in the incident. Her vehicle was found a short distance away from the tracks.
Because of the circumstances surrounding the death, Valdosta Police requested assistance from the Georgia State Patrol, which was called to investigate the fatal train-and-pedestrian incident. Norfolk Southern investigators were also notified.
